| King and Queen
|
Each colony is built around a King and Queen, whose sole function
is reproduction. The King helps the Queen establish the nest and remains
with her throughout life. |
| Workers
|
Worker termites "commute" between the colony and sources of food,
including wood fibers and other forms of cellulose which they eat,
digest, and share with other members of their colony (Soldiers, Nymphs,
and Reproductives). They keep busy 24 hours a day. These workers rarely
break through the surface of the wood. Instead, they work from inside.
As a result, the cast majority of their work is not visible to the
untrained eye until lots of damage is done. |
| Soldiers
|
Unlike worker termites, Soldiers have long strong jaws attached
to a large armored head. The Soldiers sole function is to protect
the colony from outside enemies, especially ants. |
| Nymphs
|
Nymphs are baby termites. They are fed regurgitated food by worker
termites for two weeks after hatching. Nymphs undergo a series of
growth stages before assuming a role (Worker, Soldier, or Reproductive)
in the termite colony. |
